At my Prague studio, Grain of Design, I believe that space has the power to influence our inner balance. People often ask me how to bring calm into an interior without making it feel empty. I found the answer in an object that, for me, captures everything I do. We call it GGG.
A Point to Lean On
When the world blurs and gravity goes haywire, we say: GGG.
And things fall back into place.
This relief is not merely a letter pressed into a plane. It is a code:
- Gravity – a point that anchors the room and draws the eye with its depth.
- Geometry – a pure square of 900 × 900 mm in dialogue with the organic curve of the letter.
- Genesis – every piece is the birth of a new texture, created anew and differently by the craftsman's hand.
The Path to Material Poetry
I wanted to create an object that would be visually raw like architectural concrete, yet almost as soft as satin to the touch. The process of fine-tuning took months.
The mathematics of beauty. Every millimetre had to be balanced so that the letter 'G' could breathe within the plane. The height of the relief in relation to the edges creates a proportion that the eye subconsciously reads as calm and natural.
The drawing captures what the eye barely perceives in the final result: precision, without which the object would not feel self-evident.
The mastery of microcement. We used the finest grade, Microfino, in the shade Greige. It is a warm grey-beige that responds to natural daylight. In the morning it feels soft; in the evening, under artificial light, it gains depth and drama.
Playing with shadow. The negative relief, approximately 10–15 mm deep, acts as a subtle trap for light. From a distance it reads almost like a painting or a brushstroke. Up close, its true mass begins to reveal itself.
Spatial Calm and Texture Poetry
What fascinates me about this object is precisely the contrast it holds. The eye sees raw structure. The hand feels satin.
That, for me, is the essence of what I call Spatial Calm and Texture Poetry. A space does not need to be empty to be calm. It simply needs a well-chosen centre, material depth and a quiet magnetism that remains present even without loud gestures.
Greige combined with microcement also responds naturally to the angle of view and the intensity of light. The object never looks quite the same twice. It transforms throughout the day, yet never loses its inner stability.
Raw to the eye, silky to the touch. It is in this dialogue that the material poetry of the GGG object is born.
Why the Eye Lingers
A person in a space instinctively seeks depth, rhythm and structure. The GGG relief therefore does not become a dominant feature that shouts for attention, but rather a quiet companion to which the gaze keeps returning.
Once a soft linear light is directed above it, it comes alive. Shadows in the recesses merge into gentle transitions and the semi-matte surface reflects light with unexpected nobility. There is something in it that sits between architecture, painting and sculpture.
A Signature Piece for the Home
An original object finds its true meaning only when it meets a specific space.
I originally designed this relief for my own sanctuary. Gradually, however, it became clear that it wanted to go further. That is why we decided to introduce it as a Signature Product of Grain of Design.
Every piece is made by hand in our Prague workshop and every piece is, in its subtle nuances, an original. This is not serial decoration. This is an object meant to hold direction, calm and depth in a space.
GGG is not just Grain.
It is Gravity. Geometry. Genesis.
It is the moment when design meets calm.
