Introduction

Gradus.
Step.
Movement.

Breathing in the rhythm of space.

This object is not just a piece of furniture. It is a form that rises without haste – a calm ascent shaped by balance.
As the first representative of the Grain Collection, it defines the direction we want to take: toward purity, geometry, and functional poetry.

Concept

Gradus is a stepped geometric bookshelf designed as a standalone piece in space.
Each of its levels is a pause – a moment that allows the mind to breathe.

It is an object that does not demand attention.
It simply flows. Like a quiet breath. Like light gliding across a surface.

The design rests on balanced proportions and absolute unity, where no detail disturbs the architectural calm of the whole.

What Does GRADUS Mean for Grain of Design?

Gradus is the embodiment of our "Geometry & Detail" philosophy.

It is an expression of a kind space.

It shows that even a functional element can be a quiet gesture – one that does not overwhelm a room, but calms and naturally organizes it.

It is our first step toward creating objects that are present through their essence, not through their dominance.

Technical Solution

The construction of the object is based on a stepped composition that transforms a traditional bookshelf into the form of an interior staircase.

Material

MDF board allowing precise edges and a perfectly smooth surface.

Surface Finish

Fully lacquered execution including all interior surfaces and shelves – resulting in a monolithic impression.

Color

The prototype works with a shade of very light neutral white (NCS S 0500-N) in a matte finish.
Both the construction and color can be fully adapted to suit a specific project.

The entire construction and color scheme can be fully adapted to suit a specific project and client needs. The design also anticipates modular use: when two units are produced, the objects can stand side by side to create a wider staircase wall or a double-sided island in the space. For maximum mobility, the base can be fitted with hidden braked casters, allowing easy transformation of the interior without disrupting the levitation effect of the lower base.

Possible Uses

Gradus combines storage and seating, naturally extending its application:

  • Private interiors – a meditation corner in the living space, a playful bookshelf in a child's room
  • Offices and studios – a place for a creative break or informal meeting
  • Public spaces – galleries, lobbies, or showrooms for displaying objects and brief sitting

Form. Function. Gradus.

Note on the Prototype

This design was created as a conceptual study within Grain FutureLab.

The goal is to develop an idea to the point where its direction can be evaluated.
